Originally built for Tai Pak Kong by the Hui Yi Hakka dialect group, the history of Hock Teik Cheng Sin Temple in Bukit Mertajam can be dated back to the year 1879. The temple changed its name to Xuan Tian Miao in the year 1886, with the arrival of a new main deity, Xuan Tian Shang Di who is worshipped among the different Chinese dialect groups. Throughout the years, aside from being a place of worship, the temple is also the centre of activity for the local Chinese community.
