Sri Poomarathammal Temple is more than 100 years old and here below is a picture of the old temple taken in 1981; where it only was a shrine under a tree. The deity as was the temple itself gained recognition amongst devotees from the said mention tree where the shrine aboded. The tree bore flowers known as magilam in Tamil and in English as Spanish Cherry. The scenic view and pleasant fragrance from this flower is what made devotees refer to the deity as well as the temple as Poomarathammal (She who resides under the flowers). Another significant characteristic of the temple was the snake burrow or snake nest where the devotees have seen a Nagam live in it beside the main shrine. Dispersal Scheme had calculated that the temple would be effected by the roadwork. The state government then suggested three different sites for the temple to be shifted to; Jalan Calthrop (now known as Jalan Akuarium), Jalan Udini (now known as Jalan Tengku Kudin) and Jalan Khaki Bukit. The temple committee had rejected all of these sites not merely due to the fact of the vast difference in distance from its original location, but also due to the fact that they did not want the temple to lose its authenticity as well as divinity. The committee then applied to the state government appealing for Lot 128 (approximately 300 meters from the original site facing the main road). The state government finally agreed after several meetings with the temple committee to allocate a small part of the land in Lot 128 measuring 40 X 20 ft on a temporary basis. This is the very site that the present temple is located on. This temple was originally sited in front of Malayan Teachers’ College (MTC) by the side of Jalan Glugor (now known as Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah). At the end of 1970s, the then Jalan Glugor had been decided to be widened by the state and federal government and thus gave notice to the temple to be relocated as the Penang Island Traffic The temple was also registered under the Societies Act 1966 and the constitution for the temple was adopted on 13th of March 1982. After the approval was finalized, a small temple measuring 20 X 15 ft had been built. The deities from the old temple were recited to the new temple on the night of the 19th of October 1982 which lasted till the noon of 20th October 1982. This auspicious ceremony had been performed by priests from the Sivan Temple. Since that very day in 1982, the temple had flourished and gained great reputation amongst devotees who are not only Hindus but also other religions as a place of great worship and divinity. Tales of Sri Poomarathammal's miracles and her effect on several devotees' lives had spread like wildfire. As a matter of fact the Nagam that had built its burrow by the shrine in the old temple had managed to find its way to the new site and built a new bigger burrow in the new temple. For example, there was an incident when a Nagam, a 6ft long King Cobra serpent, emerged from the ground stopping a tractor from knocking the temple. As the tractor driver reversed in panic, the back tyre exploded hence stopping the tearing down process. After consulting a distinguished priest, a shrine for Nagama had been enacted as the Nagam was believed to be an avatar of Sri Poomarathammal herself. The temple chairman himself has had an unforgettable divine intervention from Sri Poomarathammal herself. While he was praying, he felt a coiling sensation around his leg. He then realized it was a Cobra and simultaneously saw an old lady standing opposite him. By the time he freed himself from the Cobra, he realized that the old lady had disappeared. There also were several incidents where people who have stayed in the temple premise to have heard loud salangai sounds as well as a strong jasmine fragrance to have filled the temple premise at odd hours. These events made devotees put their faith that that Nagam was a divine presence. The temple then became a place where many weddings and engagements took place as the belief in Sri Poomarathammal had been growing on a daily basis. Over the years the temple has become distinctive for devotees to vow to have children. The belief is to tie a small cradle on the tree and have faith in her. Furthermore, many religious activities were beginning to be held in the temple on a regular basis based on auspicious dates of the Tamil calendar. For example, Sri Poomarathammal Temple is the first temple in Penang to conduct the annual Naga Sathurthi Pooja. For every Naga Sathurthi Pooja, there will be approximately 2000 to 3000 devotees from different parts of Malaysia that will flood the temple throughout the time the pooja is conducted, which is from 6.30am till 9.00pm. Although modernization and technology had taken over the modern world, the belief and faith of devotees in Sri Poomarathammal had not budged a little over the years. In addition, the number of worshippers were increasing constantly as more and more weddings as well as religious activities were being carried out in the temple. Thus, the temple committee had decided to build a bigger and proper temple; hence they applied to the state government for the whole of Lot 128 instead of the initial 40 X 20 ft that had been allocated. The committee faced many obstacles and the goal to obtain the land to build the temple had not been a walk in the park. After months of constant appealing and meetings with the state government, the land had been alienated to the temple for a lease of 60 years in 2003 and the property is vested within the trustees of the temple. Layout plans for the proposed temple were duly submitted in 2010 and the local authority approved these plans in June 2010. The construction for the new temple began in January 2012 after a period of 6 years, the temple rebuilding had concluded in 2018. The Maha Kumbaabeshegam will be held on the 10th of March 2019.
