Latar Belakang / Sejarah

Nandaka Vihara is a Buddhist monastery in Bukit Mertajam, Penang. It was established near the Cherok Tokun Forest Recreational Park on 24th August 2008 to promote the practice of meditation. Activities include conducting meditation classes and retreats, Buddhist dhamma talks, temporary ordination, the observance of eight precepts, chanting classes and Sunday dhamma classes for children. The Samatha-Vipassana way of meditation is taught here. Although prior knowledge of this method is unnecessary – the meditation teacher will provide guidance to beginners – those who have previously practiced at the Pa Auk Tawya Forest Monastery in Myanmar will have better theoretical understanding of the technique. The Abbot of Nandaka Vihara, Bhante Dhammasubho, was ordained in Thailand in 1989. After practicing for a year in Thailand, he continued his meditation practice in Myanmar from 1991 onwards. Upon returning to Malaysia in 2008, he was invited to found Nandaka Vihara. Meanwhile, the Spiritual Advisor is Pa Auk Sayadaw who is the third Abbot of Pa Auk Tawya Forest Monastery in Myanmar since 1981.
