Loo Pun Hong is the oldest carpenters' guild in Malaysia. It was formed before 1855 and its original premises were at Lebuh Penang Street. The temple is dedicated to Lo Pan, a legendary inventor of carpenters' tools and weapons. Guild members are artisans belonging to the Sinling dialect group from Guangdong, China. This temple, established by the "Northern City" contractor's guild, was probably built in the 1880s. In 1885 it was adopted as the joint temple of the contractors' guild and the "Northern Lu" workers' guild. If one goes inside (as the author did not) there are apparently finely carved examples of sedan chairs made by the guild.
