Inception and Humble Beginnings
Risen Christ Catholic Church (RCC) in Ayer Itam, Penang, traces its roots back to 1968 when Fr. James Chan discovered a piece of land for sale. Archbishop Gregory Yong Sooi Ngean acquired the land, and with minimal renovations, a modest church was established. The original structure, featuring traditional Chinese roof tiles, served as both church and living quarters for the priest, surrounded by fruit trees.
The Early Years and Growth
Under the guidance of the first Parish Priest, Fr. Jean Tavennec, RCC commenced with two Sunday Masses. The church's interior, initially equipped with a wind-powered pedal pump organ, later upgraded to an electric organ, showcased volunteer-led roles in various church activities. Concerns about the aging building led to a decision to raise funds for a new church, with the bishop's office covering the remaining costs.
The Construction of a New Church
In 1977, after administrative delays, construction of a double-storey church building began. Fr. Tavennec supervised the process, and the parishioners actively raised funds through donations, pledge drives, and raffles. The completed church, blessed by Bishop Soter Fernandez in 1978, featured a resourceful use of donated wooden pews from other churches, a custom sound system, and a gallery connecting the wings.
Dedicated Priests and Ongoing Development
Fr. Tavennec's contributions extended beyond construction, including the establishment of a kindergarten and a study room for underprivileged children. Successive Parish Priests, such as Fr. Peter Shyu and Fr. Augustine Wong, each left a unique mark on RCC. Fr. Augustine Wong oversaw the construction of a 3-storey building, Fr. Tavennec Centre, and the present-day church in 2010, replacing the old structure. Noteworthy was the construction of a grotto inspired by Lourdes.
A Vibrant Community and Future Prospects
Post-construction, the church continued to improve, enhancing the sound system, installing air conditioning, and witnessing its first Priestly Ordination in 2010. Subsequent Parish Priests, including Fr. Maiccal Sinnappan, emphasized parishioner participation and introduced modern technologies like large TVs for visual projection.
Dawn of Franciscan Influence and Stewardship
The arrival of Franciscan Friars in 2017, Friar Arul Mariadass as Parish Priest and Friar Oliver Tham as Assistant Parish Priest, marked a renewed focus on Basic Ecclesial Community (BEC) formation. Friar Arul's pastoral sharing sessions and Friar Oliver's dedication to liturgy and music enriched the spiritual experience for the congregation. The church addressed the need for funeral wake facilities during this period.
Continuity and Shepherding the Flock
In 2023, Friar Esmond Chua became the new Parish Priest, succeeding Friar Arul Mariadass, with Friar Crispus Mosinoh as the Assistant Priest. Friar Esmond brings pastoral experience, having served in Singapore, while Friar Crispus, ordained in 2022, offers a fresh perspective. Together, they continue the Franciscan legacy, fostering growth and spiritual development within the RCC community.
This historical journey showcases RCC's evolution from a modest church to a vibrant community, guided by dedicated priests and a resilient congregation. The commitment to Franciscan values ensures a continuation of RCC's legacy as a beacon of faith in Ayer Itam.
