Latar Belakang / Sejarah

FGS Penang is one of the branch temples of the Fo Guang Shan (Malaysia) and Fo Guang Shan (Taiwan) Buddhist order, founded in 1967 by Master Ven Hsing Yun, which has over 240 branches worldwide. The temple HQ in Malaysia is Dong Zen Temple in Selangor. Fo Guang Shan Buddhist order is a proponent of "Humanistic" Buddhism,and Hsing Yun himself was the abbot of the order until his resignation in 1985.Following his resignation, Hsing Yun founded the Buddha's Light International Association (BLIA) as a layperson based Humanistic Buddhist organization. Fo Guang Shan eventually grew to become one of the most significant social actors in Taiwan; the organization has established several schools and colleges, and runs orphanages, homes for the elderly, and drug rehabilitation programs in prisons. Fo Guang Shan has also been involved in some international relief efforts. Fo Guang Shan (FGS) (Chinese: 佛光山; pinyin: Fó guāng shān; lit. 'Buddha's Light Mountain') is an international Chinese Mahāyāna Buddhist organization and monastic order based in Taiwan that practices Humanistic Buddhism whose roots are traced to the Linji school of Chan Buddhism. The headquarters, Fo Guang Shan Monastery, is located in Dashu District, Kaohsiung, and is the largest Buddhist monastery in Taiwan. The organization is also one of the largest charity organizations in Taiwan. The organization's counterpart for laypeople is known as the Buddha's Light International Association.

To nurture talents through education. To benefit societies through charitable programs. To purify human hearts and minds through Buddhist practices.

Perayaan

Fo Guang Shan (FGS) celebrates various Buddhist festivals, including Buddha's Birthday (Buddha Jayanti), Vesak, Qingming Festival, and the Dharma Gem Festival. Additionally, FGS has its own festivals like the CNY Lantern and Floral Festival. FGS Buddhist Festivals: Buddha's Birthday: Celebrated on the 8th day of the 4th lunar month in East Asia (May 15th this year) and the full moon of Vaishaka in South and Southeast Asia (May 22nd this year). Vesak: A major Buddhist festival celebrating the birth, enlightenment, and death of the Buddha, usually on the first full moon day in May. Qingming Festival: A day to repay kindness, often celebrated by visiting and cleaning family graves. Dharma Gem Festival: A celebration of the Buddha's awakening, where people can read, write, and share Dharma teachings. Other Festivals: FGS also celebrates festivals like the Kathina, Magha Puja, and Uposatha, among others. FGS-Specific Festivals: CNY Lantern and Floral Festival: Held at FGS Dong Zen Temple since 2004, integrating the creativity of BLIA members, monastics, and devotees. Fo Guang Shan Anniversary: FGS celebrates its founding anniversary annually.
