English: Every year on January 1st, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. While most of the world marks this day as New Year’s Day, Catholics begin the new year by honoring Mary’s unique role in salvation history. This feast day falls on the 8th day after Christmas (known as the Octave of Christmas). Honoring Mary as Mother of God: In the year 431, the Church formally declared the dogma of Mary’s divine maternity—affirming that because Jesus is truly God and truly man, Mary is genuinely the Mother of God (Theotokos), not just His human half. Pope Pius XI officially renewed this celebration for the universal Church in 1931.
