Martin Chemnitz, Pastor and Confessor, was one of the most brilliant Lutheran theologians of the second generation after the Reformation. Often called the "Second Martin" (following Martin Luther), he played a monumental role in defending, systematizing, and uniting Lutheran theology after Luther's death. His masterwork, the *Examination of the Council of Trent*, provided a thorough and scholarly defense of evangelical theology against Catholic counter-reformation decrees, and he was a principal author of the *Formula of Concord*, which healed deep divisions within German Lutheranism. His commemoration in the Lutheran calendar is observed on November 9, marking the anniversary of his birth in 1522.
