Saint Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist, was a tax collector in Capernaum before Jesus called him to leave his customs post and follow Him. Also known as Levi, he responded immediately to the call, hosting a famous banquet where Jesus dined with tax collectors and sinners. Tradition identifies him as the author of the Gospel of Matthew, which places a strong emphasis on Jesus as the fulfillment of Jewish prophecies and the promised Messiah. His feast day is celebrated annually on September 21.
