The Visitation commemorates the journey of the Virgin Mary, who was pregnant with Jesus, to visit her relative Elizabeth, who was expecting John the Baptist. As recorded in the Gospel of Luke, upon Mary's arrival and greeting, the baby John leaped in Elizabeth's womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, prompting Mary to utter the magnificent song of praise known as the Magnificat. This feast celebrates the mutual support of these two faithful women, the recognition of Christ in the womb, and God's humble intervention in human history.
