Saint Mark the Evangelist is traditionally recognized as the author of the second Gospel of the New Testament and is widely considered the founder of the Church of Alexandria. He is often symbolized by a winged lion, which appears on the coat of arms of Venice, the city where his traditional relics are kept and venerated. His feast day is celebrated annually on April 25.
