The Feast of St. Martin Luther, Doctor and Confessor honors the pivotal leader of the Protestant Reformation, whose courage and theological insights reshaped church history. Born in 1483, Luther was an Augustinian monk and university professor whose deep study of Scripture—particularly the writings of the Apostle Paul—led him to emphasize the doctrine of justification by grace alone through faith alone (sola fide). His posting of the Ninety-five Theses in 1517 sparked a massive movement calling the church back to biblical authority, and his subsequent translation of the Bible into German made Scripture accessible to ordinary people. Celebrated in various Lutheran and Anglican calendars on February 18th (his commemoration date), this day recognizes his enduring legacy as a bold reformer, teacher of the church, and defender of the Gospel.
