The Feast of the Purification of Mary and the Presentation of Our Lord(often celebrated as Candlemas) commemorates the presentation of the infant Jesus in the Temple at Jerusalem, fulfilling the requirements of the Jewish Law. According to the Gospel of Luke, Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the Temple forty days after His birth to offer a sacrifice and present Him to God. During this event, the elderly prophet Simeon recognized Jesus as the "Light for revelation to the Gentiles," and the prophetess Anna also gave thanks and spoke of the child to all who were awaiting redemption. This day marks an important milestone that bridges the Christmas-Epiphany season with the journey toward Lent.
