Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, the ninth Sikh Guru, was martyred in Delhi in 1675 under the orders of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb for defending the religious freedom of Kashmiri Pandits facing forced conversion. After refusing to embrace Islam or perform miracles, he endured imprisonment and torture, while his companions Bhai Mati Das, Bhai Dayala, and Bhai Sati Das were executed before him for refusing to convert. He is honored as "Hind Di Chadar" (Shield of India) for his supreme sacrifice a unique example of a Guru giving his life to protect another community's faith which strengthened Sikh resistance against oppression and inspired the later establishment of the Khalsa by his son, Guru Gobind Singh Ji.
