English: The Feast of Saint John, Apostle and Evangelist, honors the "Beloved Disciple", the brother of James the Greater and son of Zebedee. St. John was the only apostle who did not abandon Jesus at the Crucifixion, standing faithfully at the foot of the Cross, where Jesus entrusted the care of His mother, the Virgin Mary, to him. He is traditionally recognized as the author of the Fourth Gospel, three Epistles, and the Book of Revelation. Unlike all other apostles who suffered martyrdom, St. John died a natural death in extreme old age at Ephesus.
