English: The Feast of St. Stephen, Deacon and First Martyr (traditionally known as St. Stephen's Day or Boxing Day), one of the original seven deacons ordained by the Apostles to serve the needy in Jerusalem. Renowned for his wisdom, faith, and powerful preaching, Stephen became the very first Christian martyr (Protomartyr) when he was stoned to death outside Jerusalem around 34 AD after testifying to the Sanhedrin. As he was being stoned, he echoed the forgiving spirit of Jesus on the Cross, praying: "Lord, do not hold this sin against them". Placing Stephen's feast immediately after Christmas Day intentionally contrasts the birth of Christ into the world with a disciple’s "birth into eternal life" through martyrdom.
